Global payments giant Mastercard has teamed up with ODG and Qualcomm to create new “AR experience” that will give shoppers more information about potential purchases, as well as facilitating mobile payments.
The experience will be the first time that the company’s Masterpass digital wallet and identity check mobile will be mixed with iris authentication to provide safe payments.
“We are seeing major shifts in how commerce is conducted, as people lead increasingly connected, digital lifestyles,” said Sherri Haymond, executive vice president, Digital Partnerships, Mastercard.
“As the physical and digital worlds blend together, we are focused on developing solutions that provide merchants with the ability to accept payments across all technology platforms possible—in-store, in-app, online, and in AR and VR—to help drive how people will experience shopping and payments in the future.”
The three companies as way to help retailers enhance the in-store shopping experience and help generated increased sales.
Mastercard’s version of retail AR involves not only letting consumers view digital representations of products they are thinking of purchasing, but also provides them with additional information about what they are buying. Users will also be given additional options if their desired item is not currently available and will get recommendations and other useful information.
When they are done browsing and weighing up their options, shoppers will be able to pay using Masterpass, which will make use of Qaulcomm’s iris authentication to identify the user. Once they have been identified the user can select a card stored in their digital wallet to complete the transaction.
“Qualcomm Technologies’ iris authentication and extended reality technologies for Snapdragon 835 are designed to support a future generation of contextually aware commerce experiences using secure, augmented reality,” said Neeraj Bhatia, Director, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
“We are delighted to work with Mastercard to showcase new AR experiences on ODG’s sleek smart glasses based on our Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform. Our commitment to innovation has the potential to deliver more personalized in-store experiences in the future.”
